A few things about my weekend:

1. You know the iPhone map apps are bad when you’re tempted to revert back to a physical map (do gas stations even sell those any more?) Seriously, I was so frustrated by Google maps, Apple maps (and every other map app) this weekend that I almost broke my iPhone. Does anyone have suggestions? Preferably something that allows me to select my own route (i.e., drag to a different road) and gives me a birds-eye view of the map instead of the useless driver perspective.

2. Babies can make up for even the most stressful of road trips.

3. Successful day of shopping at the outlets on Saturday, until I got stranded without my wallet/phone in the bra store. Oops.

4. A day at the beach in the comfort of a private cabana (with a drink called a Dirty Banana) can make up for getting lost for an hour at an outlet mall.

5. Found out a fun story about my in-laws, who took the family to a Hooters when Ben was little … just thinking it was an owl-themed, casual place that was totally family-friendly. And they of course bought Ben’s sister (then a pre-teen) a neon Hooters T-shirt, which she proudly wore in blissful ignorance. :)

Anyone else who’s read Room can probably empathize with how creeped out I am by the story of the three girls held captive in Ohio for a decade.

“They said a 6-year-old also was found in the home.”

The book was disturbing enough when I read it a couple of years ago. But with the news from this week, I can’t get the book out of my head … and it is seriously creepy. I don’t want to imagine what those girls went through. And, because of Room, I kind of can … and it’s terrible.

Yesterday I came home to a letter from the state of NC saying that I owe them $9,000.00 in back-taxes+penalties from 2008. After moving about 7 times since then, I can’t find my 2008 state returns.

And my parents think my cat died.

I officially give up on this week.

Ben and I watched The Impossible last night. I haven’t cried that hard during a movie in probably years … tears of horror and tears of joy. It was exhausting, but I loved the movie. Naomi Watts was a force of nature, and the young actor who played her eldest son gave the best performance of the movie. Also, the little boys are so damn cute I could hardly stand it.

One of the rotten tomatoes reviews: “The aim appears to be audience immersion, as if The Impossible really wants to almost drown you along with its stars - albeit in your own tears.”

Accurate.

Last week was rough. I didn’t know Jamie very well, but we did some work together and from the little I knew her, I really liked her. I learned about her death on Wednesday, and my 28th birthday was Thursday. Everyone was so nice, but all day I felt like I was floating along, going through the motions of being grateful and trying to absorb all the love and kindness I was receiving. Ben took me to a delicious dinner at Lantern, and after my second glass of wine the tears just started flowing. A sadness was welling up inside me that I couldn’t contain.

The memorial service on Saturday was packed to the brim, and some incredibly moving eulogies were delivered. There were flowers everywhere and a big, smiling portrait of Jamie staring up at everyone. The muffled sounds of crying filled the huge room throughout the service, but I don’t think there was a dry eye while they played James Taylor’s beloved “Carolina in my mind.”

On my was back from the service, I drove down Cameron, past the Old Well. The azaleas were in full bloom, perhaps as bright as I’ve ever seen.
